Ready. or Not, Here She Comes!

In honor of the 20th anniversary of The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, hailed as “one of the most incredible albums ever made”, we are thrilled to host Grammy Award-winning, multi-platinum powerhouse Ms. Lauryn Hill as the Opening Night Party Performer on Friday, June 1st.

Ms. Hill is a well-rounded American rapper, singer, songwriter, producer and actress, has continued to have a profound influence on modern-day hip-hop and R&B. Born in 1975 and raised in South Orange, New Jersey, Hill was determined to have a career in entertainment . Known for being a member of the Fugees, her voice led the group to fame in the mid-’90s on hits like Killing Me Softly and Ready or Not. Hill released her 1998 solo album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, altering the course of hip-hop forever. Miseducation premiered hit songs like Doo Oop and Ex-Factor, helping Hill win five Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year, Best New Artist, and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance . Miseducation blended rap, neo-soul, and reggae into personal songs about heartbreak, philosophy, and faith, cinching her still-standing reputation as one of the most talented and versatile MCs of her era . With her soulful, surprising and emotional lyrics, she captures audiences with her old school demeanor. Said to have grown up signing along with mostly male soul singers, her low and raspy voice creates a powerful sound that fans yearn for. Hill followed Miseducation with her live album, MTV Unplugged No. 2.0, performing the entire acoustic album live, ditching her hip-hop background for a new sound. Unplugged No. 2.0 debuted at Number 3 on the Billboard charts, selling over a million copies in the first month.

Hill’s classics remain relevant as she has set the tone for other female artists to create “honest music,” encouraging them to reflect on personal stories that fans can relate to and connect with. Adele describes Miseducation as “life-defining,” and credits Hill alongside of Mary J Blige and Alicia Keys as some of her inspirations . More recently, Hill has remained busy working with other artists to raise money for charities she is passionate about. She has headlined benefit concerts with Beyoncé and Nicki Minaj, and has worked on projects with Mariah Carey and Sean Combs.

Proceeds from the festival will benefit Ms. Hill’s charity fund, which supports education, health, agriculture, technology, and community-based businesses throughout the Diaspora.
