GIFF is proud to award six charity organizations with our Community Impact Awards of $100,000. These organizations are collectively helping our community become a stronger, more equitable place for all. Our grant winners support critical work being done for individuals facing mental health challenges, food insecurity, joblessness, immigration integration, special needs and victims of sexual violence.  They include:  Abilis, Building One Community, Family Centers, Filling in the Blanks, Food Rescue, and The Rowan Center. 
 
We are also excited to share information on our 2021 Community Champions, deserving organizations providing crucial needs for people in our community.  We invite you to learn more about the Community Champions and get involved through financial support or voluntarism. GIFF Community Champions

Mission Statement:
The Alzheimer’s Association leads the way to end Alzheimer’s and all dementia by accelerating global research, driving risk reduction and early detection, and maximizing quality care and support for all.

Fundraising:
Funds raised allow the Alzheimer’s Association to continue providing assistance through our 24/7 helpline, virtual support groups and education programs, advocating for the protection of our most vulnerable populations in nursing homes and remaining the leader in funding both local and global Alzheimer’s research initiatives. Our vision is a world without Alzheimer’s and all dementia.

Volunteer Opportunities:
Volunteer opportunities are available in these areas: advocacy, awareness and fundraising, community education and care and support initiatives. We are in need of committee members for our annual Fairfield County Walk to End Alzheimer’s and Celebrating Hope Gala.

Mission Statement:
The mission of the Avon Theatre Film Center is to preserve and operate the historic cinema by providing a culturally significant film, educational and programming palette, which draws patrons from the greater Stamford region.

Fundraising:
The Avon Theatre is raising funds to continue its acclaimed film series – The Black Lens, which is  an exploration of the African-American experience as seen through the prism of film, featuring moderator Harriette Cole, filmmaker, author and radio talk-show host.  The Black Lens series provides the community stimulating cinema that educates, inspires and offers post-film discussions with the filmmakers about issues of social justice and racial equity.

Mission Statement:
Circle of Care for families of children with cancer provides practical, emotional, and financial support from their day of diagnosis, through treatment, and beyond. Our programs and services address the unique and challenging non-medical needs of pediatric cancer because we know kids need more than medicine to heal.

Imagine a family diagnosed with pediatric cancer. Now imagine a family diagnosed during a global pandemic. The financial and emotional toll is unimaginable – and devastating. Circle of Care is there for these families, focusing on their non-medical needs beginning on day one of diagnosis, throughout treatment, and beyond. Our 7 programs and services serve to help guide and support families throughout their journey.

Mission Statement:
The Clothes To Kids of Fairfield (CTKF) mission is to provide children on Free and Reduced-Price Lunch Program or in crisis a shopping experience twice a year in a simulated store for a week’s wardrobe for free.

Fundraising:
Clothes To Kids of Fairfield County envisions a community in which every school age child has quality clothing so that he or she may attend school with the confidence and self-esteem needed to achieve success.

CTKF is requesting funds to provide new items for 2000 wardrobes.

Volunteer Opportunities:
During the Pandemic CTKF is providing curbside pick-up. We need people to fill bags, sort through donated clothing, organize the store, and participate in Saturday curbside pick-up. When CTKF feels it is safe to resume “shopping in the store” we will need volunteers to also be personal shoppers.

Mission Statement:
To transform lives and relationships through clinically excellent counseling in a discreet and caring environment.

Fundraising:
We raise funds in order to provide therapeutic services to those who otherwise could not afford it.

Due to the confidential nature of our work we aren’t able to accept volunteers except for our fundraising events. Greenwich Hospital is committed to innovation and excellence in patient care, teaching, research and service to our communities.

Fundraising:
Greenwich Hospital’s Circle of Hope Program for Nurses, a groundbreaking program developed at Greenwich Hospital by Rabbi Mary Jane Newman, works to create new “frames” of support and community as we address the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. Specifically geared to supporting nurse caregivers on the frontlines of the pandemic, the ultimate goal is to help all of us adjust to these radically different life experiences, and to heal the trauma associated with this psychological and spiritual dislocation.

Mission Statement:
The Greenwich Scholarship Association is committed to shaping a better future for graduating high school seniors by helping bridge the gap between what college costs and available student resources.

Fundraising:
Based upon students’ individual circumstances, GSA matches qualifying students with need-based scholarship awards funded by generous community organizations and individuals.  With an all volunteer board and extremely low overhead, all donated funds go directly into funding scholarship awards.

Volunteer Opportunities:
As a 100% working board, GSA is happy to welcome all interested volunteers. We have a number of committees working with sponsors, donors, students and award matching. We also can always use help in back office tasks including data organization, marketing, web design and fundraising.

Support Levels:

  • $50-$500 donation to the GSA Scholarship Fund which combined with other funding distributes over $200,000 annually as scholarship awards.
  • $1000 creates a one year named scholarship for one student – donor would receive individual student profile of recipient
  • $2000 creates a renewable $500 named award for one student – donor would have option to track student’s path through college through annual updates.

Mission Statement:
The Greenwich United Way identifies unmet local health, educational and self-sufficiency needs, raises awareness and support, and works collaboratively with community partners to initiate solutions and implement programs that have a lasting and positive impact.

Fundraising:
We are raising funds for our Reading Champions program. Different from other volunteer reading programs, Reading Champions is focused on building the students’ fluency skills. Close to 150 specially-trained volunteers tutor several hundred children in all of the Greenwich elementary schools and four after-school programs.

Volunteer Opportunities:
We welcome volunteers to our Reading Champions Program as a volunteer tutor. Also, volunteer opportunities are available for our Community Investment Process and event committees (Sole Sisters, Brew Ha Ha, Golf).

Support Levels:

  • $200 – Underwrite the printing materials for one site for the year
  • $500 – Sponsor 10 students within the program
  • $1,000 – Fund the end of year medals and books for the 100 students
  • $2,000 – Fund one of our elementary school sites for 1 year

Mission Statement:
Kids In Crisis’ mission is to build healthy communities where children and families thrive through prevention, counseling, and crisis services available 24 hours every day.

Fundraising:
KidTalk, our crisis prevention and intervention program at the Boys and Girls Club of Greenwich, provides a Master’s-level Counselor who works on site, at the Club’s request, to address participant kids’ behavioral and mental health needs. KidTalk provides individual counseling, engages families, works collaboratively with schools, provides professional development to Club staff, and has the wraparound support of Kids In Crisis 24/7 services for critical needs during the hours the Club is closed.

Volunteer Opportunities:
The pandemic has limited volunteers to virtual opportunities:

  • Provide lunch or dinner donation for the children staying in the shelter – drop off a prepared hot meal or place an order and have the meal delivered
  • Support for kids – send cards/notes of support; cheerful, bright decorations for the shelter.
  • Items for kids in the shelter: Socks – all sizes, including adult for teenagers, For the winter:  hats, gloves/mittens, lip balm, Journals, Healthy snacks

Mission Statement:
PEHT’s mission is to empower survivors with a path toward healing and independence through a long term residential recovery program and employment in our pet retail justice enterprise.

Fundraising:
PEHT is raising funding to provide life changing holistic services for female survivors of sex trafficking through a 24-month restorative residential model. We aim to provide a pathway towards healing, through a safe environment where survivors can achieve transformational growth and change free from exploitation. We are raising funds to support our vocational training program and trauma and trafficking informed wrap around onsite and offsite services which include: substance use treatment, behavioral health treatment, medical services, financial literacy, job readiness, counseling, legal services, education, transportation and much more.

Volunteer Opportunities:
We offer opportunities to volunteer onsite or offsite at our home after going through a volunteer training and completing a volunteer background screening process. Our next training is March 15, 2021, from 9am-12pm. Link and registration info is on our website on our upcoming events page! We also accept internships for key strategic areas of our program such as counseling, social work, and social enterprise development.

Support Levels:

  • $250 dollar donation contributes to provide a weeks worth of nutritious food for five women in our PEHT home.
  • $500 dollar donation provides onsite psychoeducational groups for one month for five survivors.
  • $1000 dollar donation provides five survivors with weekly vocational training and stipends to open up a bank account, and develop job readiness skills.

Mission Statement:
REACH Prep provides access to transformative educational experiences that empower underserved, high-achieving students to graduate from top colleges and emerge as the next generation of leaders.

Fundraising:
REACH Prep is raising funds to support our 12-year continuum of comprehensive educational preparation, support and guidance that lead our 250 students served annually on their path to 100% high school graduation from top independent schools and 90% graduation from top colleges and universities. We are raising funds to work with each student and their family on a customized and continuous basis to ensure students are successful academically, socially and are active leaders in and out of the classroom.

Volunteer Opportunities:
We welcome volunteers to help students with practice interviews, tutoring, internships, and other individual and group engagement to help our students on their educational paths. Volunteers are encouraged to contact us so we can connect them with available opportunities.

Support Levels:

  • $10,000 – Supports Prep Academy, REACH Prep’s 15-month enrichment program for our youngest Scholars.
  • $5,000 – Supports college exploration and visitation for high school Scholars.
  • $1,000 – Supports cultural field trips (in person and virtual) for middle school Scholars.
  • $500 – Pays for SAT or ACT test prep for Scholars.
  • $100 – Funds a financial aid workshop for parents.

Mission Statement:
Special Education Legal Fund levels the playing field in special education by providing resources and knowledge to families in need, empowering parents to full advocacy in the special education process.

Fundraising:
Special Education Legal Fund provides direct support grants for legal assistance from a qualified special education attorney to families in need with children in the special education system. Special Education Legal Fund also provides resource training and education to families in need who seek to further their knowledge and understanding of the special education system to fully advocate for their children.

Volunteer Opportunities:
Translator: Do you speak a language other than English? S.E.L.F. is looking for volunteers who speak Spanish, Creole, Portuguese, etc. to assist in the application intake process.

Parent Mentor: Are you a “seasoned” parent who has been through the special education process? Are you interested in mentoring a parent who is just starting the journey? Volunteer to be a parent mentor and help provide support and understanding to a parent new to the process.

Fundraising: Do you have experience in events planning or online fundraising? Special Education Legal Fund needs your help on a variety of giving opportunities and events planned throughout the year.

Mission Statement:
Our mission is to provide the students of Connecticut with opportunities to develop critical-thinking and creative problem-solving skills through invention and innovation, instilling the spirit of ingenuity in students today and for the rest of their lives. 

Fundraising:
Our organization is raising funds to help support the more than 16,000 annual youth inventors of the state of Connecticut who present their creative inventions to solve real world problems. This includes curriculum, school supplies, and professional development support for educators, support for the more than 200 Invention Convention competitions that take place in the state which capstones at the Connecticut State Finals, and meaningful prizes (including patent applications) for Connecticut’s most innovative and marketable youth inventions.

Volunteer Opportunities:
Judge for the CIC state finals (similar to “Shark Tank”), mentor for the most earnest inventors, and subject-matter-expert for inventors inventing to a particular theme or skillset (e.g., coding). We also currently have a few Board openings, for which we are ideally seeking female candidates.

Support Levels:

  • $50 – Sponsor a student’s participation at State Finals

Mission Statement:
Open Doors strives to make a direct impact in the greater Norwalk area by guiding every person in the cycle of homelessness towards housing stability.

Fundraising:
Open Doors is launching a Financial Opportunity Center to help Norwalk area residents achieve economic stability. Open Doors will work in partnership with industry experts to provide education and support through three core components – employment coaching, financial coaching, and income support –

Volunteer Opportunities:
Open Doors is looking for volunteers to conduct mock interviews as part of the Financial Opportunity Center.

Mission Statement:
YWCA Greenwich is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all.

Fundraising:
YWCA Greenwich is seeking funding to address the issues of systemic racism and gender inequity by launching The Center for Equity and Justice. Under the leadership of the newly hired Director of Women’s Empowerment and Racial Justice, The Center will be focused on education awareness raising with free community programs; direct program with delivery of YWCA Greenwich’s DIVE (Diversity, Inclusion, Values and Equity) curriculum; policy advocacy with the development of a legislative agenda; and systematic change initiatives by building coalitions to address all forms of systematic oppression.

Volunteer Opportunities:
Volunteers are needed to help organize events by securing speakers and promoting events within their networks.

Volunteers are needed to provide grassroots advocacy and appeal to legislators.

Volunteers can receive training and work with YWCA Greenwich to stand against racism.

Support Levels:

  • $100 will help fund the design of materials for The Center for Equity and Justice.
  • $250 will underwrite one session of YWCA Greenwich’s DIVE (Diversity, Inclusive, Values and Equity) program for a local non profit.
  • $500 will provide an honorarium for an expert speaker/panelist.

GIFF Community Impact Awards

Mission Statement:
Abilis provides people with developmental disabilities and their families in Lower Fairfield County, CT with support and advocacy for building able lives and strong communities.

Fundraising:
Social and recreational opportunities are essential to enhancing the quality of life for everyone, and are particularly important for people with disabilities along with their families. Support from GIFF will be used to provide technology to those within our activities program so they may continue to stay connected with their peers, family and friends.

Volunteer Opportunities:
Due to COVID-19 we are not able to engage in person volunteers, but we do welcome those with an area of expertise to contact us to host a virtual activity with our Abilis program participants, this can be anything from an exercise or meditation session to a simple snack making technique or at home art project, all shared from the comfort of your own home.

Support Levels:

  • $25 Pretend play items, books and crafts for our Birth to Three program
  • $50 Everyday dishes or household items for an Abilis residential home
  • $75 Provide diapers to our Birth to Three families for one month
  • $100 Provide membership passes to Maritime Aquarium for our program participants

  • $1,000 PPE Fund for Abilis frontline staff and program participants

Mission Statement:
Our mission is to advance the successful integration of immigrants and their families.

Fundraising:
B1C’s workforce development program prepares immigrants for jobs in industries with high local demand and high growth potential. Once participants are trained, we also help get them hired through our referral service, which connects local employers and homeowners with skilled workers.

Volunteer Opportunities:
We’re always looking for volunteers to bring their skills and talents to our programs. Our adult learners range from ages 18 to 80, and most come to Stamford with little to no English-speaking skills.

Family Centers’ Counseling and Mental Health Services help individuals, groups, couples and families resolve a wide range of personal, relationship and mental health issues. Services are facilitated virtually, within middle and high schools and at our three licensed facilities.We also offer crisis debriefing through our trained Trauma Response Team.

Volunteer Opportunities:
Family Centers realizes its mission with the support of more than 1,200 volunteers each year.

Volunteer opportunities are available in a number of Family Centers’ programs including: Literacy Volunteers, The Den for Grieving Kids, Early Care & Education, Family First in Education and much more!

Support Levels:

  • $50 will provide one mental health counseling session for an income-constrained individual
  • $250 allows the School Based Health Centers to create one specialized support group for Stamford Public Schools students
  • $500 establishes one school-based bereavement group facilitated by The Den for Grieving Kids for six months
  • $1000 allows Family Centers’ Trauma Response Team to assist a local community group with crisis counseling and support

 

Mission Statement:
The mission of Filling in the Blanks is to fight childhood hunger by providing children in need with meals on the weekend.

Fundraising:
The Weekend Meal Program provides children who are food-insecure with meals every Friday to bridge the weekend gap when they do not know where their next meal will come from. Each meal bag contains four meals and four snacks.

Mission Statement:
Food Rescue US is committed to reducing both hunger and food waste in America by connecting the vast amount of healthy, fresh surplus food with the critical hunger demand.

Fundraising:
Through our Emergency Meal Program, we purchase meals from local restaurants that our volunteers then deliver to local agencies. This initiative provides meals to those in need and supports local restaurants that may be at risk of closing due to COVID-19.

Mission Statement:
The mission of The Rowan Center is to provide counseling and support services to victims of sexual assault and to eliminate sexual violence through community-wide education programs.

Fundraising:
Peer to Peer Empowerment
Peer to Peer Advocacy Training is a new prevention education initiative in which groups of local high school students learn sexual violence advocacy skills. Groups meet weekly to discover the ways sexual violence manifests in their lives, and they work collaboratively with a Rowan educator to develop effective techniques to combat it. Teen advocates then bring their knowledge to their peers, working “from within” to help positively affect the climate of their schools, athletics, and social circles.

Volunteer Opportunities:
The Rowan Center is currently seeking volunteers to join our team of crisis advocates to work on our hotline, and is accepting applications for new members to join our Board of Directors and Advisory Board.

Support Levels:

  • $100 Share the Message- Support our media outreach to all communities and all victims of sexual violence. You’ll help connect victims to 24 hour bilingual crisis services.
  • $250 Support Groups -Bring healing to survivors by sponsoring empowerment groups, trauma-informed yoga classes, and art therapy workshops at The Rowan Center.
  • $500 Crisis Comfort for Victims- Provide clothing for 20 victims in the hospital – victims’ clothes are surrendered as forensic evidence after an assault.
  • $1,000 Advocacy Training -Provide state-certified training for 15 new volunteer advocates to accompany and support survivors at hospitals, and help staff our 24-hour hotline.
