Our Favorite Moments From the Golden Globes

There’s nothing quite like the frenetic buzz of Awards Season to rouse us from our cozy, post holiday slumber. The Golden Globes Award Ceremony is recognized as much for its informal air of freewheeling, Hollywood fun, glitz and glamour, as it is for being an early indicator of Oscar success. The 77th Annual ceremony was hosted by the subversive veteran emcee, Ricky Gervais. His unique brand of provocative humor kept the star-studded audience laughing and booing (almost equally) throughout the night. Whether you loved or hated Gervais’ nonchalant “this is my last time hosting and I don’t care” shtick, it made for entertaining television.

At GIFF, we love the spectacle of awards season. Who doesn’t love a great party? We also deeply admire and support the mission of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. We believe it’s essential to celebrate the outstanding achievements made by hard working creative artists, at the top of their craft, and to promote interest in the study of the arts among future generations. While humor always seems to be the hallmark of the evening’s festivities, it’s the hard work, creativity and dedication we are celebrating.

Here are some of our favorite moments from the 2020 Golden Globes!

  1. Tom Hanks Tom Hanks, father of GIFF Board Member Colin Hanks, and let’s face it, America’s Dad, received the highly prestigious Cecil B. DeMille Award. The award is presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for “outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment.” During his speech, an emotional Tom Hanks said, “You have got to show up on time, and you have to know the text, and you have to have a head full of ideas.” This resonated with the GIFF team, and will serve as inspiration as we plan the 6th annual Greenwich International Film Festival.

  1. Renee Zellweger In 2017, we celebrated Renee Zellweger as our GIFF Changemaker Honoree for her dedication to raising awareness, and funds, for ALS. We are so proud to see the amazing work she has done, both on and off screen, since 2017. This year, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association honored her with the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture (Drama) for the film Judy

  1. Kate McKinnon Kate MicKinnon presented Ellen DeGeneres with the Carol Burnett Award, the second person to receive the award after Carol Burnett herself! During Kate’s intro, she openly, and bravely, spoke about being a part of the LGBT community and how Ellen inspired her to pursue her dreams. “She risked her entire life and her entire career in order to tell the truth, and she suffered greatly for it. Of course, attitudes change, but only because brave people like Ellen jump into the fire to make them change. And if I hadn’t seen her on TV, I would have thought, ‘I could never be on TV. They don’t let L.G.B.T. people on TV.’”
